The Barney, Smith, and Johnson families were early Kalamazoo County, Michigan, pioneers from Vermont, settling in the Schoolcraft and Richland areas in the 1830s. Correspondence includes letters of Thaddeus Smith of Schoolcraft. Letters by Henry Parker Smith and his wife, Harriet, while in Missouri prior to and during the Civil War contain comments about the "Jayhawkers." Walter F. Smith's letters describe life with the United States Marine Band, 1893-1921, and comment about the director, John Philip Sousa, impressions of Washington, D.C., critiques of other musicians, and the Marine Band's tours in the late 1800s. Stanley Barney Smith's correspondence includes letters written while he was on the National War Work Council during World War I. Family diaries include those of the Reverend Wakeman Johnson, 1835; Mary Barney, 1862-1901; Agnes Barney, 1877-1878. Henry Parker Smith's diary, 1856, mentions Abraham Lincoln's visit to Kalamazoo, Michigan. Isa Smith's reminiscences include references to the Osage Indians in Missouri. Other materials include musical scores and sheet music, 1840s-1900s; square dance calls and cards; records of Prairie Ronde Musical Associations, 1845; Schoolcraft Ladies' Library Association; family business records, Schoolcraft; Washington [D.C.] Musical Assembly record book; 1862 minute book of the Soldiers' Aid Society, Schoolcraft; clippings, booklets, poems of E. Lakin Brown, Schoolcraft; 1800s textbooks and children's books.
