Letters to Mary E. Hart, 1847-1848.

Two letters from Mrs. C. Hart to her daughter Mary E. Hart, addressed to Churchville, New York. The first, written from Camp of Israel winter quarters in Missouri on July 17, 1847, describes the Hart family's travels from Akron to Council Bluffs, Iowa. After leaving Akron in August of 1845, the Harts were delayed by sickness in Rockford, Illinois, until March 1846, and again in Nauvoo, Illinois, by the sickness of their son John until April 1846. Mrs. Hart writes that after arriving in Council Bluffs, their son James was recruited into the Mormon Battalion and departed for California. Their sons John and Charles subsequently joined an exploratory party of pioneers bound for the Rockies. Mrs. Hart writes that she misses her daughter but would not want her to endure the hardships that characterized life in Council Bluffs. She also writes of a daughter, Harriet Amelia, who was born in December 1846 and died in January 1847. Mrs. Hart instructs Mary to direct her letters to Omaha National Indian Territory, Winter Quarters. A second letter, written from Mrs. Hart to Mary E. Hart from Savannah, Missouri, on May 21, 1848, describes the Harts' journey from Council Bluffs to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and finally Savannah, Missouri. The journey is described as an arduous one, with the Harts having difficulties moving their wagons and often traveling barefoot. Mrs. Hart also details confrontations with Indians along the route. She notes that the family had intended to keep traveling west but had stayed in Savannah to grow crops to provide supplies for the journey, and were contemplating going back to Iowa. She also praises Brigham Young for bringing her sons Charles and John home from the west. Mrs. Hart also writes of the hardships of life in Savannah and her desire to possibly travel back to New York.
