Highways, Vandalism on highway signs [View 3] [graphic] / Ernie Deane [photographer]. 1958.

Negative taken for September 21, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Taxpayers Take a Beating From Gun-Shooting Vandals," F5:2. Many signs on Arkansas' highways and rural roads are damaged each year by gun and pistol shots. These acts of vandalism usually occur during the fall and winter hunting seasons, but can happen at any time of the year. Even if the signs are not destroyed by the shots, they often will be unreadable or will rust from the damage. The Arkansas State Highway Department operates shops in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, to which damaged signs are brought for repair. The signs beyond repair are put in a salvage heap and later sold for scrap.
