Mrs. Blaylock is the great-granddaughter of Newton Knight, a leader of a band of Confederate deserters in Jones County, who had several children by an African American woman. She was raised in rural Mississippi on 80 acres of land owned by her father, a black farmer. After her retirement from the medical field, she returned to Soso, Mississippi and repurchased some of the family farm.
