Fitzhugh McMaster papers, 1946-1971.

Papers of military historian include 6 documents, 1946-1973, reflecting his career in the U.S. Navy, with copies of McMaster's official military records, and citation for award of the Bronze Star with Combat "V" device in recognition of his role as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Hardhead [SS-365, a Balao-Class Submarine] for actions against Japanese forces in Surigao area of Philippines. Excerpts, 28 Feb. 1964, re McMasters' research on the various uniforms of S.C. troops during the American Revolution, with quotes from 18th century sources, and discussion of early variations of S.C. state flag including use of multiple crescent moons. Other papers include essay, 15 Apr. 1971, Scottish Regiments of the British Army in South Carolina, which was read at a meeting of the St. Andrew's Society, Columbia; and rough drafts, 1970-1971, of volume written for the South Carolina Tricentennial Commission: Soldiers and Uniforms: South Carolina Military Affairs, 1670 to 1775, which was later published by the USC Press; footnotes and other historical documentation which did not appear in the published work are included in this collection.

A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
