The Penn State Outing Club was founded in the fall of 1921. The student-run organization serves the Penn State community and is open to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and local community members. The club organizes several outdoor events throughout the year, namely backpacking trips, rock climbing events, canoeing, and other outdoor sports. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers.
