Hugh Harding Chapman, Jr. was born on November 5, 1915 in Evansville, Indiana. He earned his A.B. from DePauw University in 1939 and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. In 1946-1947 he was a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University and from 1947-1949 he was an instructor at Rutgers University.
