Benjamin Lynde diaries and account books, 1690-1742; bulk 1732-1737.

Diaries and accounts of Benjamin Lynde, lawyer and chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, kept intermittently from 1683-1742. The diaries include fragments for 1690-1691; Jan.- Dec. 1718; 8 Jan - 4 Oct. 1720; 9 May - 18 June 1726; 4-20 Sept. 1730; 4 Jan 1732 - 21 Nov. 1737; and 1 Jan 1741 - 6 Nov. 1742. Also included are accounts for the years 1783 -1784 and 1787-1791. Entries note Lynde's travels in Massachusetts and appearance in courts throughout the state; local news and actions taken at church meetings at the First Church in Salem, Mass.; family news; and the weather. Occasional entries note the maintenance of Lynde's estate, Castle Hill, in Ispwich, Mass., including construction and development of the estate, settling the boundaries of the property, and farm tasks such as plowing, planting, and harvesting crops.
