Upper Peninsula survey maps, 1870-1890.

Series 2 of record group RG 87-78 consists of Upper Peninsula survey maps (ca. 1870-1890). During the late 19th century, many geologists were active in conducting field surveys in the western Northern Peninsula. In many cases these individuals prepared maps of the areas they traversed. These cartographs comprise this series, and provide an interesting picture of the region's development. Depicted on these sheets, in varying degrees, are physical and cultural features, the latter including such things as camps, logging and supply roads, trails, mining sites, railroads, cabins, Indian villages, and so forth. The records are mainly ink on paper, with a few maps being reproduced from originals that were not part of this collection.
