This collection consists of marriage licenses from Grand Forks County, as well as eleven index books to the licenses, dating from 1875-1995. Researchers should begin their search by determining a certificate number from the index books. Once the correct number is found, the license can be found using the box and folder inventory. The first index book dates from November 1875 until December 1886, the second index book dates from September 1887 until May 1889, the third index book dates from April 1889 until December 1891. Starting with the fourth index book, all entries have only a corresponding loose paper copy of the license; the index books serve only to provide the certificate number. Index Book Four: January 1891-October 1915, Index Book Five: October 1915-October 1938, Index Book Six: October 1938-August 1965, Index Book Seven:August 1965-May 1974, Index Book Eight: May 1974-December 1984, Index Book Nine: December 1984 - November 1985 Index Book Ten: November 1985-January 1995, Index Book Eleven: February 1995-October 1995. Researchers should be aware that some licenses were missing and/or misnumbered prior to their deposit in the Department of Special Collections. Those certificates are listed after the contents listing of the last box of the collection, Box 29. The cost for obtaining a copy of a given license in person is $2.00 per license.
