Additional family papers of the Tyler and Martin families of Bedford and Amherst counties, Va., including family correspondence, business and legal documents, genealogies, a slave bill of sale, newsclippings, copies of deed book entries and printed works. The correspondence chiefly conveys personal and family news. Other topics include religious meetings, social engagements, and politics and government in Amherst County. Events and subjects briefly noted include locomotive engine boilers, 1832-33; Missouri settlement, 1844; British foundries and manufacturers, 1857; Methodist church work during the Civil War; the seige of Petersburg, war prices, defense works in Amherst County; Amherst County road conditions; and a trip to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, 1868. Also the building of a Methodist Church in Gordonsville, Va., 1870; a train trip to Texas through Indian territory in 1880; a visit to Roanoke by McKinley and Roosevelt, 1901; a summer geography class at the University of Virginia, 1908; copper mining in Nevada, 1905; tobacco growing, 1913; and the death of a family member in World War I. Also atomic bomb testing in Nevada, 1951; a Nevada dust storm, 1951; television, 1952; Eisenhower's inaugural parade, 1953; finances and medical care of an elderly family member; work as a sales promotion agent for Coca-Cola; and work as a draftsman at the U.S. Bureau of Standards. The collection also contains genealogical notes, chart, and computer printouts; wills; a parole and loyalty oath, 1865; a roll book for the Farmer's Alliance No. 501, 1890; a map of a proposed Amherst County road, 1877; Amherst County land and subdivision plats, 1891-1922; a journal of W.H. Tyler & Company.
