Papers, 1830-1913 [1831-1851].

Correspondence, surveying notes and ledgers and plats. Much family correspondence especially from Willis Hitt a doctor in Vincennes, Ind. Letters form H.L. Mead describing Fort Scott, Kansas in 1876-1877. Much of the correspondence relates to surveying, land entries, business matters and family affairs. Other topics include organization of the militia in LaSalle County, the purchase of the Starved Rock property, Democratic politics in northern Illinois, national elections, purchase of Chippewa lands east of the Mississippi, interest in copper and other minerals on Indian lands in Wisconsin, raising troops to fight the Mexican War and coal mining in LaSalle. Those from the Civil War years mainly concern recruiting troops. Many prominent people of the time wrote to Hitt, including T. Lyle Dickey, Sidney Breese, Governors Thomas Ford, Augustus C. French and Joel A. Matteson and U.S. Senators James Semple, James Shields, and Richard M. Young, among many others. The ledgers are concerning LaSalle County land.

Came to LaSalle County Illinois in 1830 as an engineer on the Illinois and Michigan Canal, fought in the Black Hawk War, was elected LaSalle County surveyor in 1855 and helped raise the 53rd Illinois Infantry of which he was commissioned as Lieutenant and later promoted to Colonel before resigning due to injuries. Lawyer who came from New York to Illinois in 1832 and was elected to the state legislature in 1836, and to the governor's office in 1846 after which he was appointed state bank commissioner and taught law at McKendree College.
