Papers of Gary concern years as a student at the University of Virginia and his diplomatic career. The collection contains printed material; notices in the "UVA Alumni News"' clippings regarding his years as a University of Virginia student and United States diplomat; invitations and acceptances, including Lord Allenby, General Pershing, and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson; and correspondence, including letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson (copy), Henry T. Allen, John W. Davis, William H. Wranek, and John Finley. Of interest is a carbon of Gary's letter to Robert Lansing, 1919 November 27, reporting on political conditions in Egypt. Gary discusses the new ministry under Youssef Wahba Pasha, unrest among Moslems following the World War I defeat of Turkey, the Nationalist leaders, and reasons why Egypt should not become independent but remain as a British protectorate. Clippings include a copy of a speech made by Chauncey M. Depew before the literary societies of the University of Virginia, and a copy of an address by Gary "Radio broadcasting today," 1934.
