Much correspondence relates to the collecting of funds for companies or individuals. A.L. Hanson wrote to many different financial institutions and a number of merchants. Another area is letters related to real estate and attorneys. There is correspondence from 25 friends or relatives and some employees. Much correspondence relates to real estate and tax titles. Other letters deals with Hanson's responsibilities as the Hillsboro city treasurer, trustee for the North Dakota University, manager of the Hillsboro opera house, and as a member and District Deputy Grand Master of the Odd Fellows.

Albert L. Hanson was born October 28, 1854, in Allamakee County, Iowa. He moved to Hillsboro, Dakota Territory, circa 1881. Hanson went into banking with Amos L. Plummer. Circa 1882, Hanson and Plummer opened up the Hillsboro Bank. In 1884, Louis G. Phelps sold a Buxton, Dakota Territory, bank to Hanson and Plummer. This became a branch bank of the Hillsboro Bank.
