Missed him at last nights function, but hopes that he will be able to attend the concert with Mrs. Markham next Sunday. Can use the "Goelet" box and if they are able to come he would ask W. Astors cousins to join them.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
