Jefferson reports on the aftermath of a student riot at the University of Virginia. He has heard of the loss of her baggage at sea, particularly the writing desk made for her by John Hemmings and the latter's despondency over the loss as his eyesight had failed to much to make another, noting "Virgil could not have been more afflicted had his Aeneid fallen a prey to the flames." In its stead he is sending the desk on which he wrote the Declaration. Jefferson also asks Ellen to give Mr. Willard the commission for the University clock as Benjamin Waterhouse has recommended him, reports on a land purchase and difficulties caused by a tariff on marble for the Rotunda portico, asks her husband to act as agent in the purchase of fish and brandy and requests that she read the University parts of the letter to George Ticknor. With the letter is a colored print of Monticello, 1897, lacking the dome, sited incorrectly, and containing a non-existent addition.
