Had just prepared and delivered ten lectures. Spent a week in Eldorado, Georgetown. Peoels were speaking highly of Mr. Markham and that made her proud of the two of them. Talks about Charly and his new bride and other things in her live.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
