Vicepresident and cashier writes on company stationary, informing Markham that G.P. Gray sent a new two months note for fourhundred dollars. Paid an additional seven dollar to cover interest and protest fee. Asks him to get in touch to discuss businesss.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
