General description of the collection: The Austin Wortham Betts papers include transcripts of six interviews of Lieutenant General Betts, conducted by Colonel Charles Wahle and Lieutenant Colonel Floyd Henk, March 1971, as part of the Senior Officers Debriefing Program. The General therein recounts his military career, including service as the chief engineer officer in Bermuda and later with the 14th Air Force during WWII, his work at the Alamos Proving Grounds, his subsequence duty as engineer officer at G-3, U.S. Army, Europe Engineer (USAEUR); Army Ballistic Missile Agency; Director of Military Application (of nuclear developments); deputy director of Guided Missiles of the Department of Defense; and finally his tours in the Office of Research and Development, including service as Chief of that office. In addition he comments on such subjects as the development, potential application, strengths, and weaknesses of both nuclear weapons and also guided and ballistic missiles; problems of developing and procuring weapons systems; allocation of qualified personnel to technical services; and the roles and personalities of various figures with whom he has dealt, including Secretaries of Defense Wilson and McNamara.
