Carey, Niles, Coxe letters, 1796-1833.

Collection consists of ten holographic letters that demonstrate the routine daily business of noted Americans in the post-Revolutionary period: Mathew Carey, Hezekiah Niles, and Tench Coxe. Carey's letters (1803-1827) address publication problems. Niles's letters (1821-1833) include comments on the tariff and other economic matters. Coxe's letters (1796-1808) are concerned with his public duties in the Treasury Department.

Tench Coxe (May 22, 1755 – July 17, 1824) was an American political economist and a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress in 1788–1789. He wrote under the pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian," and was known to his political enemies as "Mr. Facing Bothways." Born in Philadelphia, Tench received his education in the Philadelphia schools and intended to study law, but his father determined to make him a merchant, and he was placed in the counting-house of Coxe & Furman, becoming a partner...

Mathew C. Carey (1760-1839) was a publisher, economist, and humanitarian. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and came to America in 1784, after involvement in Irish revolutionary activity. He took up his trade as a printer, publishing the Pennsylvania Herald and the periodical, The American Museum. His book publishing ventures prospered and his firm was a leader in American printing and publishing in the period 1795-1835.
