[Letters concerning the professorship of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary] 1858 May 7-17, Alexandria to [John Albert Broadus] / J.M. Broadus. 1858.

May 7. Was unable to advise his brother concerning the question of accepting a professorship in the newly formalized Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. "However anxious I may be to help you decide the question, I decline attempting it, because I cannot decide for myself." He did not want John to go so far away. "May God help you to decide." May 17. Urged John to remain at the church in Charlottesville "where you are nobly and generously sustained in every aspect, admired, beloved, and honored ... But again, I reflect that your place is one of great labor and anxiety ... and perhaps you might as well just now retire to a more quiet and less difficult place."
