[Letter] 1856 Mar. 20. Richmond to [John Albert Broadus] / J.B. Jeter. 1856.

Answered Broadus's request for advice: "I feel quite unwilling that you should exchange the pulpit for a professor's chair. We have a great lack of ministers, especially educated and effective ministers. I have no question that as the pastor of the Charlottesville Church you would exert a far more important moral and religious influence on the students of the University." The University of Virginia had offered Broadus the chair of Greek, which he refused, choosing to return to the pastorate of the Charlottesville Baptist Church. See Baptist Encyclopedia, p. 139.
