John Morrell and Company started packing meat in Ottumwa in 1877. Employees first unionized in 1918 when a Local 236 of the AMCBW was chartered. In early 1937 Morrell workers disappointed with the AMCBW created a local of the Austin, Minnesota based International Union of All Workers.
