William C. Braly papers, 1781-1968.

Contains the following types of materials: correspondence, diary /journal, photos, speeches. Contains information pertaining to the following wars: Civil War, World War I (WWI), World War II (WWII). Contains information pertaining to the following military units: Military District of Fort Monroe. General description of the collection: William C. Braly papers include official and personal papers mainly concerning his service in the defense of Corregidor and his internment in Japanese prisons. These include his official log (December 7, 1941-Febrary 7, 1942); his diary (December 8, 1941-March 27, 1942) and his correspondence with his wife while a prisoner of war. Materials contain reminiscences and anecdotes of operations on Corregidor and prison life, drawings and photographs of wartime conditions and newspaper accounts. Also found are 34 notebooks Braly kept while in captivity. Prewar material consists of articles and speeches by Braly and photographs of friends and himself. Some items relate to his stateside service during WWI. Items on retirement and veterans affairs are also found. There are a few items on the Civil War era: a document from R.E. Lee to Andrew Johnson (June 13, 1865) annotated by G.W. Custis Lee and a copy of General orders no. 7, Military District of Fort Monroe (May 14, 1866) plus "Regulating treatment of state prisoner Jefferson Davis". Some material on the sesquicentennial of the siege of Yorktown in October, 1931 is also found.
