General description of the collection: The Massachusetts Mollus papers include veterans organization papers. The four books contain correspondence and other Civil War documents. Boxes 1 through 3 contain historical studies of specific Civil War subjects. The remaining three boxes contain signature and short correspondence items of Union officers. The two card drawers are index cards to the collection by numbered document in the books. Although the Civil War is the subject, much material dates well after the war.

The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States was established in Philadelphia on 1865 April 15 as an organization of officers who fought for the Union during the Civil War. Among its stated purposes was "to cherish the memories and associations of the war" and to "strengthen the ties of fraternal fellowship and sympathy formed by companionship-in-arms."
