Stevens was a mineral surveyor in Tucson, Arizona. From the guide to the Thomas N. Stevens papers, 1914-1964, (University of Arizona Libraries, Special Collections) Stevens was born in Wisconsin on May 6, 1835. He married Caroline E. Silsbee in Columbus (Wis.) on Jan. 31, 1856. Together they had six children: Howard (d. 1858), Lu(lu) (1860- ), Mary (1862- ), Carolyn (d. 1901), and Bertha. In 1862 Stevens enlisted as captain of Company C, 28th Wisconsin Infantry.
