Cortlandt Whitehead letter, 1868.

Handwritten, signed letter from Reverend Cortlandt Whitehead dated January 20, 1868. The content of the letter is written to an unknown clergyman assigned to Cheyenne, Wyo. inviting him to visit in Black Hawk in the following Spring or Summer. Whitehead briefly mentions Bishop [George Maxwell] Randall and other similar churches and clergymen nearby at Nevada City (Reverend J. Byrne) and Central City (Reverend A.B. Jennings).

Cortlandt Whitehead (1842-1922), graduated from Yale in 1863 and was ordained Deacon in Trinity Church, Newark, N.J. in 1867. He left for mission work in Colorado in August 1867, where he served at St. Paul's Church in Central City, St. Mark's Chapel in Black Hawk, and Grace Church in Georgetown. In 1870 he became Rector of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was consecrated Bishop of Pittsburgh in 1882. From the description of Clergyman's private register, 1855...
