California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Alice Harriman, teacher, author and publisher, was born in Newport, Maine on March 12, 1861. From 1897 to 1902, she traveled for Northwest magazine and wrote articles regarding her travels. In 1907, while living in Seattle, she established the publishing company The Alice Harriman Company, making her the first woman publisher in the United States.
