The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America's Eastern Theater. Organized on June 20, 1861, as the Army of the Potomac, it soon incorporated the armies of the Shenandoah, Harpers Ferry, and the Northwest. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870.
