John will be sending Markham a little volume of verse that is now on the presses. He would like him to review his lyrics and give them a worthy review. He hasn't heard from Edwin in awhile.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
