Walter Decoster Dennis Diocese of New York Papers, 1951-1998.

This collection documents the activities and career of Walter Decoster Dennis, a Suffragan Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York (DNY). The collection is extremely diverse and covers Dennis' entire career, although the majority of the collection is focused on his time spent after becoming Canon Residentiary of DNY in 1965. The collection includes, correspondence, reports, clippings, publications, rough drafts of publications, minutes of various committees and organizations, financial records, sermons/addresses, photographs, video tapes, cassette tapes, and reel to reel tapes. Taken as a whole, this collection serves to document Bishop Dennis' professional life, including the many organizations outside the Episcopal Church with which Bishop Dennis was associated, particularly the Abortion Reform Association, and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

The Rt. Rev. Walter Decoster Dennis was born in Washington, DC on August 23, 1932 to Walter Decoster and Helen Louise Dennis. He earned degrees from Virginia State College (BA 1952), New York University School of Law (MA 1953) and General Theological Seminary (MDIV 1956). He was ordained a deacon on June 15, 1956 by the Rt.
