James Cromarty Cruickshank was born July 7, 1845, the son of Robert Cromerty Cruickshank and Caroline (Cooke) Cruickshank of Leeds, Quebec. He was the seventh of eleven children and died unmarried in 1872. He pursued his education at Richmond College, McGill University and Montreal Presbyterian College.
