Shiou-chuan Sun was born on May 11, 1911, sometimes given as April 5, 1910, in Penglai, Shantung, China. He received his bachelor's degree in mining and metallurgy at Pei-Yang University in 1936 and his master's degree in the same subject from the Missouri School of Mines in 1938. He completed his doctor of science degree in metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945.
