Shiou-chuan Sun was born on May 11, 1911, sometimes given as April 5, 1910, in Penglai, Shantung, China. He received his bachelor's degree in mining and metallurgy at Pei-Yang University in 1936 and his master's degree in the same subject from the Missouri School of Mines in 1938. He completed his doctor of science degree in metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations.
