Heard from Paul Dresser about his recent visit to Boston and also read the write-up of it. She is so much inspired by it that she plans on making a "pilgramage" to West Brighton to visit Markham.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). WorldCat record id: 702670236 Paul Dresser, a native of Terre Haute, Ind., was the older brother of novelist Theodore Dreiser. In 1873 he changed his surname. Dresser held a number of jobs, including working for minstrel shows, but found some success as a songwriter. He is best known as the author of the state song of Indiana, "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away." From the description ...
