Henry is discussing poetry and writting. He has read Man with the Hoe. Henry congratulates Edwin on the birth of his son. He refers to the Browngs and his heart in California and Miss Coolbrithe and Joaquin. He discribes York. hE is publishing and editing a small Quaker periodical. He enclosed a copy of a Poem called "Rubaiyat."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
