The Psychology Department was formed in 1910 when June E. Downey became the first professor of philosophy and psychology. Downey had published seven books and more than 70 articles before dying in October 1932. Dr. Lillian Portenier joined the Psychology Department in 1930 and investigated student mentality ratings. June Etta Downey was born on July 13, 1875, in Laramie, Wyoming. She graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1895. She accepted a fellowship in psychology at the University of Chicago, completing her doctoral study in 1907 with a dissertation on "Control Processes in Modified Handwriting." Downey was appointed a professor of philosophy and psychology at the University of Wyoming and she became head of the Department of Philosophy and Psychology in 1915 until her death in 1932.
