Student organization. The Gold Key Society was founded in 1937 by captains of the major athletic teams and other student leaders to be a greeting committee for visiting athletic teams. The organization was an all male honor society in the 1930s and 1940s. It became co-educational in 1971 and is now open to all students interested in community service. In 1863, a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts authorized five Jesuits of Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus to incorporate as β€œthe Trustees of the Boston College.” Their South End school became the first chartered college to operate in Boston in September 1864, when twenty-two boys – with an average age of fourteen – enrolled and classes began.
