Civil War veteran photographs [picture], ca. 1890.

Collection of images pertaining to Civil War veteran Edmund B. Gray, a Sheboygan, Wisconsin resident who served as a colonel in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Both images feature Gray in civilian garb; one is a cabinet card and the other is a portrait photograph in which Grey is wearing a GAR badge. Originally from New York, Gray attended the University of Vermont in Burlington. He moved to Wisconsin in 1855 and served as school superintendent in Sheboygan prior to the war. In 1861, he was commissioned as a captain with Company C, 4th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and spent time in Maryland, Virginia and Louisiana before resigning his commission in 1862 due to illness. After recovering from his illness, Gray accepted a commission as a major in the 28th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Gray was eventually promoted to colonel of the 28th Infantry Regiment, and served in this position until the end of the war. After the war, Gray worked as a life insurance agent in both Wisconsin and Illinois. Gray was involved with the GAR, working several subordinate positions following the war before becoming Commander of the Wisconsin Department of the GAR in 1898. Gray died in 1906, and is buried in Chicago.
