Images of landscape and historic building by Carlisle Roberts, including view of Clear Pond, where "Dr. Frances F. Carroll, of Planters" invented and "reputedly launched one of the first submarines ... It was fashioned in the form of a mechanically propelled torpedo and served as the basis of the design for the "David" which was constructed at Charleston for use against the Federal ship 'New Ironsides' in Charleston Harbor, 5 Oct. 1863." Also including 2 exterior views of Woodlands, home of William Gilmore Simms; images show large trees around house with brick walls on ground floor, shingle-siding on upper level, and rocking chairs on porch; inscribed, "original study of W.G. Simms" which he expanded and converted to a living space "after destruction of original mansion by Sherman."
