The USS St. Mihiel was built by the American International Shipbuilding Corp. on Hogs Island, Pennsylvania in 1920. She was used as an army transport, carrying soldiers to and from battle. In 1923, she carried the last American soldiers back from Germany at the end of World War I. In 1943, the USS St. Mihiel was decommissioned to the Navy, where she served as an army hospital ship. Ross served in Company C of the 723rd during World War II. In 1924, the 614th Railway Engineer Battalion, a reserve unit, was organized. It was redesignated as the 614th Engineer Battalion in 1933. On Feb. 21, 1941 it was again redesignated as the 723rd Railway Operating Battalion (ROB). The Battalion was ordered into active service in Dec. 1943 and deactivated on Jan. 3, 1946 at Camp Kilmer (N.J.). During World War II it had occupation duty in Germany, May 2-Oct. 30, 1945.
