Markham writes his friend Lea and tells her about his travels to Savannah and St Paul dealing with child wefare at the convention their. Training for fatherhood and motherhood and not permitting the physically and mentally deficient to marry unless they are submitted to sterilization. He went to Washington and many were interested in his social and literary work. He is thinking about Lea and his sweet friend Sara and how good they were to him.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
