This record group consists of various records of the Mecosta County, Michigan Probate Court for the years 1860-1917. Included are: the journal of the Probate Court which offers a narrative account of all the actions of the court for the years 1860-1893 and 1901-1917; index to estates in probate (no date given) which offers an alphabetical list of names, whether deceased, insane, minor or adopted with a file number and other information; and selected case files (ca. 1870-1938) which include various estate settlements cases, including that of Woodbridge Ferris and other individuals of special interest to Mecosta County. The record group also includes: orders of hearing and proof of publication (1894-1915); records of administration of claims (1894-1903); sales of real estate at private sale to settle estates (1895-1906); record of probate wills (1887-1910); appraiser's warrant and inventory (1901-1912); record of administrators (1902-1915); record of appointment of administrators and guardians (1896-1907); and bond letters relating to appraisal of property (no date given).

Woodbridge (Nathan) Ferris, also known as "The Big Rapids Schoolmaster," was born near Spencer, New York on January 6, 1853. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Michigan in 1912, 1916, and 1924. He was governor of Michigan from 1913-1916 (he was defeated in 1904). He also was elected as a U.S. senator from Michigan and served 1923-1928. He died in Washington, D.C. on March 23, 1928 and was interred at Big Rapids, Michigan.
