This working draft copy of the property tax roll book for Harris Township, Centre County, Pa., contains three sections. The first section lists names of owners of real estate, who occupied the real estate, and the number of acres, value, and occupation. The second section lists tenants, the property on which they resided, and their occupation. The third section lists the names of single men,their place of residence, and occupation. Included on the rolls are prominent land owners, merchants, physicians, and professors, students, and laborers at the Pennsylvania State College. Adam Hess, tax assessor for Harris Township, created this working copy from which he prepared the official certified copy.

Adam Hess worked as the tax assessor for Harris Township, Centre County, Pa. in 1875. The Centre County Commissioners directed him to list all taxable persons in Harris Township as owners of real property, tenants, or single men. The tax assessor earned $2 an hour while the tax collector received a commission on all the taxes he collected.
