Anna can see from the telegram that Edwin is in Michigan. She is still dazed from the celebration, the air still tangles with praises for you and the flowers are a literary reminder in our house. There is going to be a Markham Movie, there are articles written about it. She is getting ready for the May Poetry week. She refers to Robert Bridges Testimony, Miss. Mills, and Miss Phillipps.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
