Letter 1908 Oct. 15, Landing, N.J. [to] John William McClymonds, [California / Edwin Markham]. 1908.

This letter is unsigned and lenghty. It discusses Markham not writing as often as he should. He had a visit from Mrs, Mary George and they spoke of many things. He told her that he spent ten years under J.W. McClymonds and he was the best in America. Then Markham starts to discusess the problems he had withthe Columbian Historical Novels concerning the Patriotic Reading circle that hw was never told he was a member of.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
