James Thomas Williams papers, 1859-1936.

Personal and business correspondence (9099 items + 13 volumes), including letters between Williams and his wife, Sally McBee Williams, re operation of the hardware firm of Williams, Wilkins and Co.; the 1880 presidential campaign of Winfield Scott Hancock; African-American suffrage; and Williams' representation of the interests of his father-in-law, Vardry McBee, in Camperdown Mills. Letters of sons Silas, Sumner, and Vardry McBee Williams reflect social and academic life at Clemson University, Columbia University, Harvard Law School, The University of the South, and West Point ca. mid-1890s through 1911. Letters of son James Thomas Williams, Jr., relate to his career as editor, correspondent, and reporter with The State, The Tucson Citizen, Boston Evening Transcript, Associated Press, and William Randolph Hearst newspapers. Letters from J.T. Williams, Jr., discuss 1905 Portsmouth Peace Conference, Theodore Roosevelt's administration, the 1908 presidential campaign of William Howard Taft, the administration of Herbert Hoover, New Deal politics, national defense and foreign relations with Cuba, Japan, and the Philippines during the 1930s, and Alfred M. Landon's 1936 presidential campaign. Volumes include household account books, bank deposit books, mercantile store stock books, memorandum book concerning Greenville, S.C., city council affairs, and souvenir banquet program from the opening of the Seaboard Air Line Railway's direct line between Richmond, Va., and Tampa, Fla.
