Manuscripts, printed materials, ephemera, photographs, and a scrapbook documenting the activities of a Marxist socialist feminist, especially her interest and involvement in various political and cultural revolutions throughout the world from the 1950's to the 1980's. Among countries involved are France, China, the United States, and Central America. Also documents her work as editor of the MONTHLY REVIEW and founder of WIRE (Women's International Resource Exchange). Correspondence includes letters from her daughter, Vicki, that reveal their close personal, intellectual, and political relationship. They include letters written by Vicki during her college years, when she traveled to Cuba in defiance of U.S. policy, and participated in the civil right movement in Mississippi. Newsclippings, articles, and publications address such issues as women's economic status, their roles in the family, violence against women, reproductive rights and sexuality, and indigenous women's movements. Extensive segments deal with women's liberation in the 1970's and 1980's in Cuba, South America, Latin America, Central America, Italy, and the United States. Similar materials found in Vicki Ortiz's file sinclude item related to political and cultural movements in Cuba, Mexico, and Latin America. Vicki also maintained extensive files on adoption issues. The collection also includes tapes, the majority of which are recordings of tours taken by Ortiz during her travels in China and Latin America. Additional tapes include recordings of radio programs, interviews, and readings related to Ortiz's activism. Some photographs in this collection accompany the China tapes, and others may correspond to the Latin America tapes. The remaining photographs chiefly consist of casual snapshots of Bobbye Ortiz, friends, and family.
