Includes by-laws, board meeting minutes, and financial records relating to the Waterman Steamship Corporation and Ryan Stevedoring Company, a Waterman subsidiary set up for the loading and discharging of vessels. Other important records include material pertinent to the acquisitions of the Mobile, Miami, and Gulf Steamship Company, the Mobile Oceanic Line, and the Pan-Atlantic Steamship Company, along with the files relating to the functions and future development of those companies. Contains records on the operation of various Waterman vessels and correspondence between the Waterman Steamship Corporation and its offices in other ports. Also contains correspondence with the United States Shipping Board as well as correspondence concerning United States ocean mail contracts. Of particular interest are letters to and from notable figures such as Senator Hugo L. Black, Congressman John McDuffie, and John T Cochrane, president of the Alabama, Tennessee, and Northern Railroad Corporation.

Hugo LaFayette Black (1886-1971) was a judge for the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated by Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 12, 1937; confirmed by the Senate on August 17, 1937; and received his commission on August 18, 1937. He assumed senior status on September 17, 1971, but his service was terminated soon thereafter, with his death on September 25, 1971. ...

John B. Waterman, a native of New Orleans, moved to Mobile in 1902.
