Will be in town next week Tuesday at the Commodore Hotel and is wondering if he could come and visit him there; wants to talk about the poem President Roosevelt wants and the speech for the Democratic Convention; Markham wrote personal note at bottom of letter trying to see if he is free to have lunch with Stigner.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
