Asks to be congratulated since he was appointed to conduct a weekly community literary vespers service at the local Methodist Church; talks about its format and asks Markham if he could come to some of the functions as a guest speaker; also asks for a letter of greeting from him to read at the inauguration; thanks for the copy of "Ode to Boston"; asks what he thinks of using recordings of his readings.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
